What the Engine Looks Like Running
Procedural Map Generation
Mission graphs are generated fresh each run, weaving infiltration checkpoints, deception nodes, and confrontation forks across Hinomoto's four distinct locations.
- Node adjacency rules are location-aware — Mirror River graphs favor misdirection nodes; Kurogane Dojo graphs are dense with hidden passage shortcuts
- The same contract objective can appear on a radically different graph depending on current faction hostility and accumulated Shadow Debt
- Map generation seeds include active Hollow Crane erasure events, which can close routes mid-run without warning
Composure Under Pressure
Your shinobi's composure is the most finite resource in the game — every close call and forced kill drains it, and a broken composure doesn't just end the run, it changes how NPCs and contacts read you before it does.
- Composure degradation is visible to faction-aware NPCs — guards at Kurogane react to a shinobi whose hands aren't steady
- Contacts at the Veil Market charge more, share less, and sometimes report you when your composure is visibly fractured
- Strategic composure preservation — choosing deception over violence — is the primary differentiator between short runs and long ones
Faction-Aware NPC Behavior
Every NPC in Hinomoto carries faction allegiance that shapes patrol logic, dialogue options, and threat response — the Hollow Crane's sentinels don't fight like Five Clans guards, and both differ from Accord's Ghost enforcers.
- Hollow Crane operatives prioritize evidence removal over pursuit — they will burn a room rather than chase you through it
- Accord's Ghosts operate on intel thresholds: they don't appear until you know too much, then they converge from multiple nodes
- Five Clans elders can be leveraged as distractions if your standing with their remnant is positive — turning NPCs into assets is core to efficient play
Intel Extraction Loop
The mission objective is rarely violence — it is knowledge. Extracting an Accord fragment, a Hollow Crane operative's identity, or a clan elder's location requires navigating toward information without becoming information yourself.
- Intel quality degrades if extraction is rushed — a fragment burned in a firefight at Ash Temple yields less than one retrieved silently
- Each extracted fragment advances the Clan Intel Layer, building the permanent cross-run picture of who wrote the Accord and who wants it forgotten
- Failed extractions still leave traces in the world — the Hollow Crane notices what you were looking for even if you didn't find it
The river shows you what you fear. Cross it anyway — the archive does not wait for shinobi who hesitate.
The Mirror River district floods its lowland streets with water that carries sound upstream — a patrol's footstep arrives before its owner, and reflections show what should be around the corner but isn't. Ash Temple still exhales smoke from walls that were supposed to be dead, now sheltering the Hollow Crane cult among its scorched rafters. Each location is procedurally threaded into the mission graph, so the same checkpoint appears in a different position, guarded by a different faction, every run.
